Below Are Answers To Some Commonly Asked Bee Questions
1) Honey bee's can only sting one time, after that they
die. Hornets, wasps and yellow jackets can sting you repeatedly!
2)Honey Bee's never sleep, they are awake all the time
even in winter. They can travel up to 4 miles away from the hive to get pollen and nector. When the queen mates she leaves the
hive and flies off, many males (droans) fly after her and the strongest male mates with her in the air.
Upon returning to the hive, that male (droan) is killed due to the fact that he has the queen faramone scent on him.
3)
The queen bee can lay as many as 1500 to 3000 eggs a day. 18 days later they hatch.
4) the majority of a honey bee colony is
made up of worker bee's, all of which are female bee's. The males (droans) only make up a very small percentage, and last but not
least, you have one queen.
5) Honey bee colonies swarm 1 to 2 times per year. This happens in the spring and summer. When
the hive is over crowded they make a new queen. Usually the old queen leaves the hive with roughly half the colony following her.
The queen will land some distance from the original hive and all the other bee's will ball up around her making what is called a beard
or a ball about the size of a small soccer ball. The colony will stay in this position for 24 to 48 hours. The males (droans) will
then go and find a new home for the colony. In a tree, the eve's of a house, in a wall etc... The males
return to the swarm and tell them where to go to find their new home. The queen goes and they all follow.
6) Honey is usually
harvested in the fall (October). The bee keeper will add boxes to a bee hive called "supers" usually one every 2
to 3 weeks throughout the summer. The bee's will add honey to each of those boxes as they are stacked on the hive. Sometimes
up to 4 or 5 supers can be added in a single season. Each box can contain 60 to 80 pounds of honey.
